In January 2011, the introduction of high-efficiency cogeneration in Europe radically modified the incentive scheme for combined heat and power (CHP) plants. Since then, the techno-economic feasibility of new cogeneration plants in different areas of application (industry, service, residential, etc.), along with the definition of their optimal operation, have inevitably undergone a radical change. In particular, with reference to the Italian case and according to the most recent ministerial guidelines following the new EU regulation, in the event that cogeneration power plants do not reach an established value in terms of overall efficiency, their operation has to be split into a CHP and a non-CHP portion with incentives proportional to the energy quantities pertaining to the CHP portion only. In the framework of high-efficiency cogeneration, the present study compares different CHP solutions to be coupled with the paper industry that, among all the industrial processes, appears to be the best suited for cogeneration applications. With reference to this particular industrial reality, energy, environmental, and economic performance parameters have been defined, analysed, and compared with the help of GateCycle software. Among the proposed CHP alternatives, results show that gas turbines are the most appropriate technology for paper industry processes.

The paper industry is characterized by a long industrial chain and diverse production paths. Under different production paths, the sustainability evaluation results of criteria are different, so there is a decision problem of the most sustainable production path. At present, the sustainability evaluation researches of the paper industry usually make a quantitative comparison of single or multiple evaluation criteria, respectively, and lack the integration of multiple criteria to make the overall optimal production path. This study selects the tissue paper industry as a case and takes the life cycle water consumption, energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and internal costs as evaluation criteria. Two multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) models, the interval sum weighted method and technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution, are used to obtain the sustainability rankings of seven different production paths for tissue paper. The results show that the production path based on natural sulfate bamboo pulp has the highest sustainability, while the production path based on bleached kraft pulp has the lowest sustainability. The sensitivity analysis of the two MCDM models is carried out by changing the weight of the criteria. It is found that the bleaching operation has a significant impact on the sustainability ranking of production paths. The production paths based on wood pulp and bamboo pulp are superior in terms of water consumption, energy consumption, and GHG emissions, while the production paths based on straw pulp and bagasse pulp are superior in terms of internal costs. The method proposed in this study will also provide ideas for the sustainability assessment of other industrial processes.

Introducción. Este articulo desarrolla un método para estimar costos eléctricos por unidades de producción en una industria, basada en la norma ISO 50002 y estándares ISA 5.1 e ISA 88.1. Objetivo. Encontrar indicadores que relacionen el consumo de energía con los niveles de producción. Materiales y métodos. El método consta de ocho pasos: definición de objetivos, recolección de datos históricos, definición de áreas de interés, realización del censo de carga, ejecución de medición, trabajo de campo, cálculos y resultados y análisis. Siendo aplicada en una industria licorera en Popayán Colombia, dónde se estimaba el costo eléctrico por producto asignando el 80% del total consumido al área de producción. Resultados. Con la aplicación del método se encontró la cantidad de energía necesaria para producir una unidad de aguardiente en distintas presentaciones; en el área de producción el consumo de energía es fluctuante cada mes, pero su promedio es del 22% del total facturado durante el periodo estudiado. Conclusiones. La estimación de energía teórica tiene un error del 2,4% en comparación con los equipos de medición, por lo que el método desarrollado es apropiado para la implementación práctica.
