“…We calculated the carbon emission performance of each city by using the Super-Slacks Based Measure (Super-SBM). Compared with the traditional data envelopment method (DEA), the Super-SBM method has obvious advantages in solving the problem of input and output slackness by introducing undesirable outputs and modified relaxation variables (Iftikhar et al, 2018;Lin and Zhu, 2021). Furthermore, it also can effectively evaluate the factor efficiency in the presence of unexpected outputs (Li and Shi, 2014;Abudureheman et al, 2023a).…”

“…We find that the impact of regional integration is higher for firms located in regional core cities. According to previous studies [43,44], Guangzhou and Shenzhen are the core cities of the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration, and Foshan, Zhaoqing, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen are the peripheral cities. For example, the regional integration leads to an increase of 105.5% in terms of environmental performance for SO 2 in Guangzhou, which is the core city, whereas the impact of regional integration in Jiangmen and Zhuhai only presents 31.7% and 20.1% (these are peripheral cities).…”

“…In the past decades, the eastern region of China has been a priority development region of the state based on its comparative strengths (Chen et al, 2021a). It has always been better than the inner and western regions in terms of high-quality talents, scientific and technological level, infrastructure construction and economic strength (Lin & Zhu, 2021). In addition, owing to the continuous optimization of the industrial structure in the eastern region in recent years, the original resources and labor-intensive enterprises in the eastern region have been transferred to the inner and western regions (Xue et al, 2022), which will undoubtedly have a certain impact on the EE of the inner and western regions.…”
