Energy Efficient, Delay Sensitive, Fault Tolerant Wireless Sensor Network for Military Monitoring

Abstract: In this article, a new TDMA based wireless sensor network (WSN), MILMON, is proposed for military monitoring. The most important design considerations of MILMON are energy consumption, delay, scalability, and fault tolerance. There are three main components of the system: a new time synchronization schema based on the sink with a high range transmitter, hr-FTSP; data indicator slot mechanism, DISM; and a new distributed time-scheduling mechanism ft_DTSM. An analytic and simulation model has shown that energy c… Show more

“…Network Centric Warfare (NCW) [2] incorporates the idea of networking sensors, commanders and attackers to reduce the operational gap, increase protection, precision and speed of reaction to conduct effective operations. NCW is explored by many military forces across the world to facilitate mobility, increase Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities in a flexible and autonomous battlefield where commanders can see, decide and shoot in real time due to pre-awareness of situation.…”

“…WSNs can be used in a variety of daily life such as medical healthcare [5]. Sensor nodes are designed to be easy to carry on human bodies (such as a watch) so that the healthcare professionals can gather data for further analysis.…”

“…Moreover, we discuss the benefits and defects of each protocol with some metrics (data latency, stability and power consumption). Other surveys on the mobile sink routing in WSNs exists in the literature [3][4][5]8]. Our survey focus on energy efficient strategies with mobile sink in WSNs, we aim to introduce a more detailed research on this project.…”

“…Recently, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been used in many applications, such as military target tracking and surveillance [1], meteorological hazards [2], wildlife monitoring [3], natural disaster relief [4], and healthcare [5]. A WSN consists of a sink node, also called a base station, and a group of sensor nodes.…”
