Energy‐efficient, reliable wireless body area networks: cooperative diversity switched combining with transmit power control

Abstract: Cooperative diversity using switched combining, incorporating transmit power control (PC), is investigated for wireless body area networks (BANs). Outage probability and switching rate are derived from extensive empirical measurements, along with savings in circuit power consumption using simple 'sample-and-hold' PC in conjunction with switch-and-examine combining (SwC). Theoretical approximation of the switching rate gives a reasonable match with the empirical analysis. It is shown that transmit PC with SwC i… Show more

“…The Nakagami m and Ω parameters of the input signals were estimated using a non-linear least squares routine programmed in MATLAB to fit (4), (6) and (8) to the measured data. To allow a direct comparison between the fading signals, the root mean square (rms) signal level was removed from the output envelope.…”

“…Over the last few decades, a number of studies investigating spatial diversity techniques have been performed in the context of wearable or equivalently body-centric communications [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. However, the majority of these have considered only PSC, EGC and MRC schemes [7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
