Energy extraction method for EEG channel selection

Abstract: Channel selection is an improvement technique to optimize EEG-based BCI performance. In previous studies, many channel selection methods-mostly based on spatial information of signals-have been introduced. One of these channel selection techniques is the energy calculation method. In this paper, we introduce an energy optimization calculation method, called the energy extraction method. Energy extraction is an extension of the energy calculation method, and is divided into two steps. The first step is energy ca… Show more

“…The method outperformed previous version of PSO by reducing the error rate by 10.4%. Fauzi et al [6] used L2-norm to calculate the energy of each channel and selected the channels with high energies as the active channels for EEG classification. For the hand MI EEG dataset, C3-Cp3-C4-Cp4-Cz, C3-Cp3-C4-Cz-Cpz and Cp3-Cp4-Cpz were selected.…”

“…The wrapper method involves a feature extraction process for performing channel selection. Some wrapper methods are presented and proposed in [19], [20]. The hybrid method is a method of channel selection by combining filtering and wrapper methods.…”

“…The rhythmic activity is divided into wave bands by frequency while the transient is referring to spontaneous spikes and wave formations that are sharp [23]. There are five types at the most critical frequency ranges: delta (2-4Hz), theta (4-8Hz), alpha (8-12Hz), beta (15-30Hz), and gamma (30-80Hz) [6,24].…”
