Energy harvesting by sweeping voltage-escalated charging of a reconfigurable supercapacitor array

Abstract: EscaCap is an energy harvester that uses a boostup charge pump to perform maximum power-transfer tracking (MPTT) while charging a reservoir supercapacitor array (RSA) with a reconfigurable topology. Unlike buck-down type harvesters, the voltage-doubling charge pump of EscaCap enables the sensor nodes to operate under low ambient power conditions. The supercapacitors in the RSA can be dynamically configured for series or parallel topologies by means of a switch array for not only minimizing leakage of the super… Show more

“…The inputs of this model are the latitude of the deployment site, orientation and inclination angles of the solar panel, and expected meteorological and environmental conditions. A system comprised of a solar panel, lithium battery, and MPPT control circuit can take full advantage of solar energy to extend the life of the rechargeable battery [ 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Supercapacitors have extremely long life cycles, high power density, and eco-friendly materials [2,5,6]. The voltage difference between an anode and a reference electrode is 0.85 to 2 V while the current varies from 2 to 4 mA depending on the soil condition surrounding a single reference electrode.…”

“…DC-DC converter has minimum required input voltage, and so the system designer should also consider all these practical requirements when designing a system [8]. Esca-Cap performs reconfiguration of the supercapacitor array to maximize DC-DC converter efficiency [9]. Nowadays, more systems are being equipped with renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) modules.…”
