Energy intensity among European Union countries: the role of renewable energy, income and trade

Abstract: Purpose The International Energy Agency states that the global energy intensity must reduce by 2.9% yearly before attaining Sustainable Development Goal 7.3 by 2030. However, the European Union (EU) seeking to attain a climate-neutral EU by 2050 shall require a substantial rate of reducing energy intensity. Consequently, this study aims to investigate how (clean) renewable energy, income, trade openness, technological innovation and nonrenewable energy consumption impact energy intensity for the EU countries. … Show more

“…It was discovered that transition to more conservative (renewable) sources of energy guarantees a better environment irrespective of the location of the economy. These align with the findings of Dong et al (2017), Steve et al (2021), Gyamfi et al . (2022c), Ghosh (2022), de Oliveira Sousa et al (2022) and Tuna et al (2022).…”

“…However, as the economy shifts to the service sector which is less energy dependent, emission reduces. Finally as the economy grows to higher levels, the quality of the environment becomes a matter of concern to citizens and policymakers and measures are put in place to reduce pollution (Gyamfi et al. , 2022; Panayotou, 1997; Alhassan et al.…”

“…Figure 6(e) illustrates a decrease in fuel efficiency, while Figure 1(b) displays an increase in energy intensity of fuel consumption. According to previous studies [26,27,28], energy intensity should decrease as energy consumption varies, and efficiency should increase with economic growth. However, the observed increase in energy intensity in road transport in the city, coupled with the country's heavy reliance on fossil fuels, may explain the discrepancy.…”
