Energy-saving investigation of vacuum reactive distillation for the production of ethyl acetate

Abstract: Ethyl acetate (EtAc) reactive distillation (RD) configurations often use atmospheric pressure, and this operating pressure can be reduced further to conserve energy based on the condenser cooling water temperature. Using the Aspen Plus simulator, two proposed configurations, RD column with stripper and pressure swing reactive distillation (PSRD), were simulated at lower operating pressure. The impact of RD column operating pressure on total energy usage and total annual cost (TAC) was studied. All design param… Show more

“…The esterification method was used by the authors to study the reactive distillation of ethyl acetate. The decanter is used to separate the product's wastewater from that of the product, and there are various methods for treating that wastewater [17][18][19]. The methods for producing biogas from palm waste were investigated by the authors in Oman, and the biogas energy can be used for wastewater treatment [20].…”

“…They set the column pressure at 0.5 atm because this pressure allows for water as a cooling agent (18). Patil et al studied reactive distillation and pressure swing reactive distillation at vacuum pressure for ethyl acetate synthesis, and the results show a significant reduction in RD column energy requirement (19).…”

“…RD reduces by 20% or more the capital expenditure and energy requirements when compared to the conventional set-up (reactor followed by distillation), (Harmsen, 2007). In RD, chemical reaction and recovery are integrated into one column (Geng et al, 2022;Patil and Gnanasundaram, 2022;Slak et al, 2022). RD is usually safer as reaction temperature has low changes and the runaway behavior is less severe (Harmsen, 2007).…”
