Energy Storage Systems Current Ripple Reduction for DC-Link Balancing Method in Hybrid CHB Topology

Abstract: This paper focusses on a hybrid topology for a CHB, where some or the modules are equipped with energy storage systems. In addition to the well-known capabilities of the CHB as a STATCOM, the hybrid topology has new advantages as a grid stabilizer. However, the current ripple on the energy storage systems has negative effects which tends to result in expensive solutions. To overcome this inconvenient, a previously known balance strategy is modified to prevent the ripple without compromising the DC-Link balance… Show more

“…This research considers the thermal conditions and attempts to reduce the degradation caused by over-switching without interfering with the performance. This problem takes special relevance in hybrid applications such as [29]. In these situations, a lower number of commutations can improve the lifetime of the ESS and reduce the switching losses of the modules, resulting in great economic savings.…”

“…As this configurational concept proceeds, the inverter output voltage waveform nears a sinusoid; with less harmonics content. CHB inverters are popularly deployed in power electronic transformer applications, [1], [2], [3], static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) [4], [5] energy storage system, [6], [7], [8]. They also have wide application in renewable generation systems, [9], [10], [11]; as well as in electric drive applications, [12], [13] and charging stations [14].…”

“…Finally, a new method was presented in [ 31 ] to control all the DC-Link voltages independently without interfering with the grid current. It has later been expanded in [ 32 ] to further consider a power set point for modules comprising ultra-capacitors or other ESSs. This method considers all freedom degrees and calculates the optimal output of each module without having to iterate through all the possibilities, thus reducing the computational cost.…”

“…Finally, the present paper explores more deeply the effect of tuning and configuring the method. This was not performed in [ 31 ], where all modules were considered to be equal and only superficially considered in [ 32 ], where modules difference was very limited. In the present paper, several tests were run where modules were treated differently, showing the effect of different settings combinations.…”
