Energy Transfer in Dy3+ and Tb3+ Double-Doped Barium Borate Glass

Abstract: In this work, single- and double-doped Dy3+ and Tb3+ barium borate glasses are investigated for their potential as light converters. The density and the absorption coefficient show linearly increasing trends with an increasing lanthanide content. The external quantum efficiency of the double-doped samples is a combination of the respective single-doped samples. The strong energy transfer from Dy3+ to Tb3+ results in an intense Tb3+-related emission, i.e., an intense green luminescence. Thus, excitation at a Dy… Show more

“…The average decay time τ of SGO host is determined to be 1.825, 1.702, 1.611, 1.548, 1.439 and 1.316 μs for Sr 1− x Ga 2 O 4 : x Tb 3+ with x = 0, 0.001, 0.003, 0.005, 0.007 and 0.009, respectively. The decrease in the decay lifetime of Ga 3+ with increasing Tb 3+ dopant content provides compelling evidence for the energy transfer from the SGO host to Tb 3+ , as reported by Zuo et al 40 and Grüne et al , 41 respectively. Furthermore, as shown in Fig.…”

“…Using lifetime change, the Dexter and Föster formula (Eq. 2-3) can be used to quickly determine the effectiveness and likelihood (probability) of energy transfer from Nd 3+ to Er 3+ /Pr 3+ ions [ [30] , [31] , [32] ]: In the terms of lifetime, the energy transfer probability can be expressed by Refs. [ 33 , 34 ]: where τ Nd_co-doped is the sensitizer's lifetime in the presence of activators (Er 3+ /Pr 3+ ) and τ Nd-pure is intrinsic decay time of sensitizer (Nd 3+ ) in the absence of activators.…”
