Energy Use of Fine Grinding in Mineral Processing

Abstract: Fine grinding, to P80 sizes as low as 7 lm, is becoming increasingly important as mines treat ores with smaller liberation sizes. This grinding is typically done using stirred mills such as the Isamill or Stirred Media Detritor. While fine grinding consumes less energy than primary grinding, it can still account for a substantial part of a mill's energy budget. Overall energy use and media use are strongly related to stress intensity, as well as to media size and quality. Optimization of grinding media size an… Show more

“…In grinding processes, energy consumption is a very important profitability criterion for the applied particular size reduction technology. The energy consumption of grinding is the subject of many studies, especially in the case of ball mills for grinding clinkers [8,9], fuels [10], iron ore [11], hematite ore [12], sulfide ore [13], wet ores [14], and in the case of stirred mills for grinding ores [15][16][17] and wet quartz [18]. In [19,20], the energy efficiency of various coals grinding in the ball-and-race mills is studied experimentally.…”

“…Miao et al [3] examined the specific energy requirement for mechanical size reduction of selected biomaterials for biomass-based bioenergy using knife and hammer mills. Other aspects of grinding process such as energy efficiency [5], energy use pattern during mineral processing [6], strategies for improvement of milling performances [7] and effect of comminution device on quality of particles [8] are well documented.…”

“…The grinding of minerals to powder-comminution-in order to extract metals from minerals, consumes a significant fraction of the global yearly energy production, and any optimization of this is of huge economical and environmental significance [12,13]. In geophysics, the triggering failure in landslides and snow avalanches are typically shear fractures, and perhaps the most magnificent fractured shear zones of all are tectonic faults.…”
