“…A total of 13 studies were then excluded from the analysis: one reported immediate postoperative outcomes following lumbar fusion; 6 two enrolled colonoscopy cases; 26,27 three included fracture or osteoporosis cases; 2,14,28 and seven were case reports. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] Overall, eight studies comprising 407,462 patients were included in this metaanalysis. The study selection process is shown in Figure 1.…”

“…40,41 In several case reports of implant failure, normal intestinal flora was isolated in joint aspiration cultures from patients with IBD. [32][33][34] A prospective, case-control study by Coelho-Prabhu et al 42 found that patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy were at increased risk of PJI. The investigators suggested that this finding may be related to transient bacteraemia during endoscopic procedures.…”

“…18,19,24 In recent years, the focus has been on the association of IBD and postoperative THA implant failures. Individual case reports by Passick and Hirsh, 26 Thompson et al, 27 and Ramos Martínez et al 28 described long-term implant failures due to septic causes, most often associated with suspected gastrointestinal fistulas. Similarly, Kapadia’s 2014 matched cohort study reported that the rate of complications was statistically higher in IBD patients ( p = 0.0098), with long-term implant failure occurring due to sepsis and acetabular loosening.…”

“…Septic failure has been the predominant complication reported in IBD patients who received a primary THA; however, these reports only consist of individual case reports. [26][27][28] In a matched cohort study comparing surgical and clinical outcomes following THA (23 IBD, 46 control cases) Kapadia et al 22 reported that at mean 47 months of follow-up, IBD patients had a significantly lower implant survivorship and higher major complications than control patients. Moreover, a recent 2021 study by Moran et al 23 found that IBD patients had a higher risk of revision surgery due to septic causes and implant-related complications than control patients (p = 0.004), suggesting there may be an association between bowel health and THA outcomes.…”
