Engagement in the pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) cascade among a respondent‐driven sample of sexually active men who have sex with men and transgender women during early PrEP implementation in Zimbabwe

Abstract: Introduction Zimbabwe is scaling up pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for key populations, including men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). To assess implementation and inform HIV programming, we evaluated gaps in PrEP awareness, uptake and use, and correlates of awareness and uptake among a sample of MSM, TGW and genderqueer individuals (GQ) in Harare and Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Methods Respondent‐driven sampling was used to recruit 1194 MSM and 344 TGW… Show more

“…SSA, were found and reported varying degrees of PrEP engagement [ 48 , 86 , 91 , 92 ]. For example, among Zimbabwean MSM aware of PrEP, 76.4% of them had used it recently [ 91 ]. In terms of correct adherence rates in Kenyan MSM, they varied from 0–14.5% when measured with protective drug concentrations [ 48 , 92 ] and from 68–83% when measured with a medication event monitoring system [ 86 ].…”

“…PrEP is highly effective in HIV prevention [68]. Daily use of PrEP reduces HIV risk by 75% to 99% [9,10]. However, the low perceived risk of HIV and poor awareness and knowledge of PrEP limits the use of PrEP, especially in HIV hyperendemic settings [10,11].…”

“…For example, only 45% of transgender women surveyed in South Africa were aware of PrEP [12]. Similarly, only 45.8% of MSM and transgender women were aware of PrEP in Zimbabwe [9], and more than half (53.6%) of MSM in Nigeria were aware of PrEP in Nigeria [13].…”
