Engineered Escherichia coli strains as platforms for biological production of isoprene

Abstract: Volatile compounds can be produced by fermentation from genetically engineered microorganisms. Escherichia coli strains are mainly used for isoprene production owing to their higher titers; however, this has thus far been confined to only strains BL21, BL21 (DE3), Rosetta, and BW25113. Here, we tested four groups of E. coli strains for improved isoprene production, including K‐12 (DH5α, BW25113, W3110, MG1655, XL1‐Blue, and JM109), B [Rosetta (DE3), BL21, and BL21 (DE3)], Crooks C, and Waksman W strains. The i… Show more

“…Such crops not only would have better energy utilization efficiency, reduced carbon loss, and increased yields but would also help to reduce greenhouse gas production as global warming increases. Engineering of isoprene synthesis has been reported in Cyanobacteria ( Chaves and Melis, 2018 ), Escherichia coli ( Liu et al, 2019 ; Lee et al, 2020 ), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ( Lv et al, 2016 ) but not in field crops.…”

“…The apparent physical properties of isoprene (C 5 H 8 , 2-methyl-1, 3-butadiene) are colorless and highly volatile at room 25 • C [24]. Isoprene found at very low concentrations in nature and is utilized as carbon source by several organisms eukaryotic and prokaryotic [25,26]. Isoprene is an important platform chemical essentially important for a production of chemicals such as synthetic rubber, sensitive adhesives, and elastomers.…”
