“…Rather than replacing CFRCs with PNCs, they are being integrated into the overall composite system as an additional constituent. The resulting property improvements are utilized to forestall failure modes, offer lower cost processing, impart additional functionality, or provide a lighter weight design …”

“…(b) Polished cross-section SEM of a conductive composite lay-up demonstrating integration of a resin-infused conductive nanoparticle veil (NiNanostrands, Conductive Composites) as a face sheet (top) on a composite structure containing metal-coated carbon fiber prepreg (middle) on top of the base composite layers (unpublished, AFRL, courtesy Max Alexander). (c, d) Lay-up of rocket engine motor support strut with CNT paper outer layer and location on main body of the Juno spacecraft (from ref ). Examples of self-passivating character of PNCs (nylon–clay) when exposed to extreme environments, including (e) oxygen plasma (left, from ref ) and (f) solid rocket motor firing (from ref ).…”

“…Afterwards, scientists were able to develop an outstanding nanocomposite system with finely tunable miscibility through a simple mixing process that did not require any additional processing. By tailoring the nanocomposite system through NP surface modifications for various applications, they gradually solved the chronic issues they had encountered when the inorganic and organic materials were only roughly mixed ( Figure 2 ) [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ].…”

“…As a class of thermosetting polymer networks, polycyanurates have proven to be exceptionally useful in extreme environments due to the highly stable nature of the cyanurate cross-links formed from cyanate ester monomers. Some notable environments where polycyanurate networks have proven useful include the charged particle and radiation environment around Jupiter encountered by the Juno space probe, the heat of atmospheric entry for the Mars Curiosity heat shield, and the intense neutron bombardment expected within the ITER thermonuclear fusion reactor and other superconducting magnets exposed to high radiation doses . From a more fundamental perspective, the high stability of the cyanurate cross-link allows for the formation of networks with a very well-defined and, fortuitously, easy to monitor chemical structure even in the fully cross-linked state.…”
