Enhanced Absorbent Products Incorporating Cellulose and Its Derivatives: A Review

Abstract: Cellulose and some cellulose derivatives can play vital roles in the enhancement of the performance of absorbent products. Cellulose itself, in the form of cellulosic fibers or nano-fibers, can provide structure, bulk, water-holding capacity, and channeling of fluids over a wide dimensional range. Likewise, cellulose derivatives such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) have been widely studied as components in superabsorbent polymer (SAP) formulations. The present review focuses on strategies and mechanisms in whi… Show more

“…The extractives present in cellulosic fibers also have a hydrophobic behavior. On the other hand, absorbency of cellulosic fibers is positively correlated with the content of hemicellulose (Hubbe et al 2013). Tissue products manufactured with curly fibers are bulkier and more absorbent (Trepanier 2017).…”

“…8, much of that water has been attributed to other mechanisms, such as hydration of the cellulosic material (Joubert et al 1959), "bound water" (Park et al 2006), or water participating in a type of hydrogel (Scally et al 2006;Hubbe et al 2013). Past research suggests that ionic species including H3O + and OH -can readily diffuse within a hydrogel, though rates of diffusion may be slower in comparison to diffusion in bulk water (Bromberg 1991;Feng et al 2011;Golmohamadi and Wilkinson 2013).…”

“…These has been possible by introducing microporous structure into the hydrogel ,by introducing phase inversion desiccation technique in acetone, which increases the retention and swelling kinetics due to capillary effect. Main advantage of cellulose-based hydrogel over current SAP is that they are environment friendly, biodegradable and excellent biocompatibility [18,19].…”
