In this study, magnetic polydivinylbenzene latex particles MPDVB with a core-shell structure were tested for the removal of bisphenol A (BPA), copper Cu(II), lead Pb(II), and zinc Zn(II) from aqueous solutions by a batch-adsorption technique. The effect of different parameters, such as initial concentration of pollutant, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial pH solution on the adsorption of the different adsorbates considered was investigated. The adsorption of BPA, Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) was found to be fast, and the equilibrium was achieved within 30 min. The pH 5-5.5 was found to be the most suitable pH for metal removal. The presence of electrolytes and their increasing concentration reduced the metal adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. Whereas, the optimal pH for BPA adsorption was found 7, both hydrogen bonds and π-π interaction were thought responsible for the adsorption of BPA on MPDVB. The adsorption kinetics of BPA, Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) were found to follow a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data for BPA, Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) adsorption were fitted well by the Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the desorption and regeneration studies have proven that MPDVB can be employed repeatedly without impacting its adsorption capacity.

BACKGROUND: The effect of process parameters of a hybrid process integrating adsorption and ultrafiltration in a single system was investigated for bisphenol A (BPA) removal from water. The styrene-divinylbenzene-based, macroporous Purolite MN 202 and Dowex Optipore L493 polymeric adsorbents were employed for adsorption of BPA from water while a ZW-1 model submerged ultrafiltration module was applied in the hybrid system to separate the fine adsorbent particles from treated water.RESULTS: According to the results obtained using Dowex Optipore L493, the optimum operating conditions to reach minimum BPA concentration in the treated water were found to be: adsorbent concentration 0.5 g-adsorbent L −1 -solution, replacement rate of saturated and fresh adsorbents 9 mL min −1 , permeate flow rate 3 mL min −1 , and polymeric adsorbent particle size range 50-100 m. CONCLUSION: The adsorption-ultrafiltration hybrid system is considered as a promising treatment process for removal of BPA from water using highly crosslinked polymeric adsorbents Purolite MN 202 and Dowex Optipore L493.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are formed of starch molecules that are linked together in a cyclic ring. They are composed of five or more (1, 4) connected D-glucopyranoside units. CDs have toroidal, hollow truncated cone structures with exterior hydrophilic edges and internal hydrophobic cavities. The numerous hydroxyl groups available in cyclodextrins are active sites capable of forming various sorts of connections. They can be cross-linked or derived to generate monomers able to form branching or linear networks. Furthermore, they can form inclusion complexes with a variety of guest molecules, including organic and inorganic molecules, thus changing their physicochemical properties, The modification of the imprinting method could produce molecularly imprinted polymers that are stable, dependable, long-lasting, selective, and cost-effective. As a result, molecularly imprinted polymers are becoming increasingly popular in chemical separation and analysis. As found in previous studies, the monomers of cyclodextrins used in molecular imprinting have a higher binding impact on target molecules. The purpose of this study is to highlight the application of imprinting technology utilizing cyclodextrins as a valuable functional monomer in the remediation of phenolic compounds by examining and assessing relevant works published in the literature.
