Enhanced chlorine‐resistant and low biofouling reverse osmosis polyimide‐graphene oxide thin film nanocomposite membranes for water desalination

Abstract: The effect of graphene oxide (GO) loading (0.03, 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.30 wt%) in the aqueous phase on the performance of reverse osmosis (RO) polyimide (PI) thin film composite (TFC) membrane was investigated. TFC and thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were produced through interfacial polymerization and the imide linkage was confirmed by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The spongy-like structure with vertical fingers of RO PI-GO TFN membranes was explored by top-sur… Show more

“…ISO 16,610 used a Gaussian L-Filtering of 2.0 m to remove long wavelengths from the signal. The hydrophilicity of the membrane was manually measured three times by calculating the contact angle between the two surfaces ( Hamdy and Taher, 2020 ).…”

“…HA rejection (R) outcomes have been estimated through monitoring HA quantities at 250 nm using a UV–vis spectrometer (Bio Quest CE2501), which would be shown by following equation [ 31, 32 ] : R()%=CfCpCf×100 …”

“…TRP weakens the bond between foulants and the membrane surface, causing foulants to come out from the membrane and providing efficient membrane cleaning. 36 Physical cleaning and chemical cleaning are susceptible to membrane surface damage. TRP does not have this drawback as their structural change helps in foulant removal, a mild chemical for membrane matrix, and no harsh mechanical energy is required to remove foulants from the membrane surface.…”
