Enhanced desorption of fluoxetine from polyethylene terephthalate microplastics in gastric fluid and sea water

Abstract: There are concerns that microplastics act as a vector of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment. Most studies have focussed on pharmaceutical adsorption and have not investigated desorption in the various matrices that microplastics enter. Therefore we studied the desorption of the antidepressant drug fluoxetine from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics in river water, sea water, and simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. We found that most desorption occurred rapidly, within a few hours of exp… Show more

“…The simulated digestive juice was configured according to the relevant components found in the digestive system of aquatic organisms (Wagstaff and Petrie, 2022). The gastric juice was composed of pepsin and NaCl at concentrations of 3.2 g•L −1 and 100 mmol•L −1 , respectively, and the pH was adjusted to 2.0 using HCl to simulate an acidic gastric environment.…”

“…Sorption of organic contaminants is another possibility of enhanced contamination of aquatic environments. Concentrations of persistent organic pollutants on microplastics were found much higher than in surrounding natural waters (Matijaković Mlinarić et al 2022;Wagstaff and Petrie 2022). Interactions of inorganic and organic contaminants with microplastics and nanoplastics would potentially increase the risks associated with the ingestion of plastic particles.…”

“…The recycling performance of C-SAA and C-SAAoa is shown in Figures 10, 11. The F − adsorbed on the material can be desorbed by acids, bases, salts, etc (Wagstaff and Petrie, 2022). In order to ensure the adsorption performance of the adsorbent after desorption, the choice of the desorbent depends largely on the -OH content.…”
