Enhanced Hydrophilic and Electrophilic Properties of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Biofilm Carrier

Abstract: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) biofilm carrier is used as a carrier for bacterial adsorption in wastewater treatment. The hydrophilicity and electrophilicity of its surface play an important role in the adsorption of bacteria. The PVC biofilm carrier was prepared by extruder, and its surface properties were investigated. In order to improve the hydrophilicity and electrophilic properties of the PVC biofilm carrier, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) were incorporated into polyvinyl chloride (… Show more

“…The shape of the PVC packing media used in the current study also might have contributed to its poorer performance compared to gravel. Flow and substrate transport through the inside of the media might have been limited, decreasing the effective surface area (Cai et al, 2020).…”

“…Various types of fillings currently used in wastewater treatment processes are mainly made of polymeric materials [ 35 ], the most common of which include low-density polyethylene (PE-LD) and high-density polyethylene (PE-HD), as well as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These plastics are widely used due to their good mechanical, processing, and functional properties, as well as their availability on the market [ 36 , 37 ]. However, these materials need to be modified due to new avenues of application, the need to alter or improve selected properties, and the requirements imposed on such products.…”

“…Biological wastewater treatment processes are the most widely used methods for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater treatment technologies (Cai et al, 2020;Nguyen et al, 2021;Uluseker et al, 2021). The advanced nitrate removal is performed by denitrifying functional microbiota, which is the critical process to achieve the standard discharge of nitrogen.…”
