Enhanced Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling inBi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δIntrinsic Josephson-Junction Stacks

Abstract: We have investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8 + delta) intrinsic Josephson junctions at millikelvin temperatures using microwave irradiation. Measurements show that the escape rate for uniformly switching stacks of Nu junctions is about Nu(2) times higher than that of a single junction having the same plasma frequency. We argue that this gigantic enhancement of the macroscopic quantum tunneling rate in stacks is boosted by current fluctuations which occur in the series array of jun… Show more

“…Moreover, the feasibility of macroscopic quantum tunnelling (MQT) was recently discussed by the authors of Refs. [13,14]. Such studies might be virtually unaffected by heating as long as they appropriately address the statistics of stochastic switching from a zero-P state.…”

“…This is due to a corresponding change in the dissipative environment seen by the array. This result suggests that comparisons of macroscopic quantum tunnelling [7,8] out of the two states should reveal illuminating differences. …”
