Enhanced model protein adsorption of nanoparticulate hydroxyapatite thin films on silk sericin and fibroin surfaces

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite coated metallic implants favorably combine the required biocompatibility with the mechanical properties. As an alternative to the industrial coating method of plasma spraying with inherently potential deleterious effects, sol-gel methods have attracted much attention. In this study, the effects of intermediate silk fibroin and silk sericin layers on the protein adsorption capacity of hydroxyapatite films formed by a particulate sol-gel method were determined experimentally. The preparation of th… Show more

“…Protein-scaffold surface interaction played a crucial role in establishing the nature of the tissueimplant interface as protein gets adsorbed from body fluids before cells can attach to the surface of the biomaterials. This protein scaffold interaction then determines and regulates the cell adhesion and its behavior [32,35]. Also, the nature of the adsorbed proteins on the scaffold surface heavily influences subsequent reactions such as platelet activation and adhesion and coagulation cascade activation.…”

“…The biocompatibility of a material is closely related to the protein adsorption on its surface. BSA was used as a model protein to simulate the action of bone morphogenetic proteins [35]. The percentage and amount of BSA protein adsorbed onto the surface of SF 80 /CH 20 are represented in figures 8(C) and (D), respectively.…”

“…Although this method is simple, it is time-consuming and will take more than 2 h. An improved preparation method, known as the mesoscopic oscillatory flow reactor, has been developed to produce HA/SS four times faster than the traditional method . Additionally, HA/SS as a coating material can enhance the biocompatibility of metal implants in vivo …”
