Gaze behavior offers valuable insights into attention and cognition. However, technological limitations have prevented the examination of animals' gaze behavior in natural, information-rich contexts; for example, during navigation through complex environments. Therefore, we developed a lightweight custom-made logger equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and GPS to simultaneously track the head movements and flight trajectories of free-flying homing pigeons. Pigeons have a limited range of eye movement, and their eye moves in coordination with their head in a saccadic manner (similar to primate eye saccades). This allows head movement to act as a proxy for visual scanning behavior. Our IMU sensor recorded the 3D movement of the birds' heads in high resolution, allowing us to reliably detect distinct saccade signals. The birds moved their head far more than necessary for maneuvering flight, suggesting that they actively scanned the environment. This movement was predominantly horizontal (yaw) and sideways (roll), allowing them to scan the environment with their lateral visual field. They decreased their head movement when they flew solo over prominent landmarks (major roads and a railway line) and also when they flew in pairs (especially when flying side by side, with the partner maintained in their lateral visual field). Thus, a decrease in head movement indicates a change in birds' focus of attention. We conclude that pigeons use their head gaze in a task-related manner and that tracking flying birds' head movement is a promising method for examining their visual attention during natural tasks.

Futurecasting ecological research: the rise of technoecology

Abstract. Increasingly complex research questions and global challenges (e.g., climate change and biodiversity loss) are driving rapid development, refinement, and uses of technology in ecology. This trend is spawning a distinct sub-discipline, here termed "technoecology." We highlight recent ground-breaking and transformative technological advances for studying species and environments: bio-batteries, lowpower and long-range telemetry, the Internet of things, swarm theory, 3D printing, mapping molecular movement, and low-power computers. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize ecology by providing "next-generation" ecological data, particularly when integrated with each other, and in doing so could be applied to address a diverse range of requirements (e.g., pest and wildlife management, informing environmental policy and decision making). Critical to technoecology's rate of advancement and uptake by ecologists and environmental managers will be fostering increased interdisciplinary collaboration. Ideally, such partnerships will span the conception, implementation, and enhancement phases of ideas, bridging the university, public, and private sectors.

Navigation Ground Augmentation System Based on a Wireless Sensor

To improve the performance of navigation systems and expand their application, a navigation ground augmentation system platform was designed based on wireless sensor. The system included the signal augmentation generation and reception verification platforms. The enhanced signal-transmitting and -receiving parameters were controlled through two sets of visual host software. Meanwhile, the performance indexes of the navigation ground augmentation platform were tested. Finally, the received data was captured by MATLAB coding process and the navigable messages were tracked. Results showed that the system satisfied the design requirements and could effectively improve the performance of the navigation system.
