Enhanced Voltage Sorting Algorithm for Balancing the Capacitor Voltage in Modular Multilevel Converter

Abstract: In this paper, an enhanced voltage sorting algorithm is proposed for balancing each sub module capacitor voltage in modular multilevel converter (MMC). However, the submodule (SM) voltage strategy becomes more complex when it increases to a number of levels, which eventually increases voltage ripples and circulating current. In order to overcome this problem, an enhanced voltage sorting algorithm is proposed, which implies an enhanced control logic function for capacitor voltage balancing of the converter. The… Show more

“…The "modulator and cellbalancing" block serves as a link here on its own. It creates the pulse patterns (gpxj, gnxj) for the cell switches [33], [34] define a feasible approach that involves cell balancing. The energy in the arms has been represented by the total amount of the VC of each arm (uCpy and uCny).…”

“…Unlike conventional two-and three-level converters, the MMC needs an additional controller to balance SM capacitor voltages and the circulating current (CC) to ensure stable operation. In this paper, the circulating current (CC) control strategy proposed in [16], and the sorting-algorithm-based SM voltage balancing [24] method were implemented.…”

“…16 To balance each SM capacitor voltage of MMC, different methods are implemented in the literature based on frequency sorting algorithm, feedforward control methods. In frequency sorting algorithms, 17,18 it is needed to arrange the SM capacitor voltages in ascending or descending order, that is, the SMs are inserted or bypassed based on the direction of arm current. The capacitor voltage is balanced by generating the suitable signals for corresponding SMs without measuring arm currents.…”
