Enhancement in realism of ATC simulations by improving aircraft behaviour models

Abstract: This paper addresses the challenge to provide realistic aircraft behaviours in air traffic control simulations. Many simulation environments lack actual information on aircraft, airline or airspacespecific operational procedures: they resort to generic procedures to navigate the simulated aircraft, which may result in unsatisfying aircraft behaviours. A methodology has been developed by EURO-CONTROL to improve the aircraft behaviour model in its large-scale and real-time air traffic management simulation syste… Show more

“…American Institute of Aeronautics and AstronauticsAccording to Gillet et al7 , three phases of acceleration are made during Initial Climb, where the speed V 2 increases by 10 kt, 30 kt and 60 kt (CAS). The next acceleration is attempted after reaching 10000 ft.…”

“…BADA also provides a generic aircraft behavior model called AiRline Procedure Model (ARPM), which focuses on how the aircraft is operated [9]. During climbs and descents the energy share factor defines how much of the available power is allocated to vertical evolution as opposed to acceleration.…”

“…Gillet, Nuic and Mouillet [9] are using radar recordings to get realistic data to fine tune ARPM. Different energy share factors and speed profiles have been calculated according to airline operator, operating airport, aircraft type, flight phase and flight range with the help of statistical processing.…”
