Design of experiment is the method, which is used at a very large scale to study the experimentations of industrial processes. It is a statically approach where we develop the mathematical models through experimental trial runs to predict the possible output on the basis of the given input data or parameters. The aim of this chapter is to stimulate the engineering community to apply Taguchi technique to experimentation, the design of experiments, and to tackle quality problems in industrial chemical processes that they deal with. Based on years of research and applications, Dr. G. Taguchi has standardized the methods for each of these DOE application steps. Thus, DOE using Taguchi approach has become a much more attractive tool to practicing engineers and scientists.And since the last four decades, there were limitations when conventional experimental design techniques were applied to industrial experimentation. And Taguchi, also known as orthogonal array design, adds a new dimension to conventional experimental design. Taguchi method is a broadly accepted method of DOE, which has proven in producing high-quality products at subsequently low cost.

The increasing trend of chiral drugs in the pharmaceutical industry has promoted greatly on the development of numerous biocatalytic routes in combination with chemical methods. Because the resulting chiral alcohols are particularly valuable intermediates and precursors for the synthesis of chiral drugs, dehydrogenases and reductases have been extensively used in the synthesis of chiral compounds from ketone substrates with high regio-and stereo-selectivities. In this review, biocatalytic processes carried out by dehydrogenases and reductases are described for the synthesis of chiral intermediates for a wide variety of pharmaceuticals, including antidepressants, anti-anxieties, anti-asthmatics, anti-hypertensives, cholesterol-lowering agents, NK1 antagonists, ACE inhibitors andLactamase inhibitors.

This investigation reports on the effect of Pongamia oil doped with lube oil on tribological characteristics of Al-7% Si alloy using the Taguchi method. The control factors involved were Pongamia oil percentage (PB 0%, PB 15%, PB 30%), sliding velocity (1.3 m/s, 2.5 m/s, 3.8 m/s) and load (50 N, 100 N, 150 N) which was optimized for weight loss, friction coefficient and wear rate characteristics of Al-7% Si alloy. The conventional lubricant SAE 40 was used for the experiment and for contamination. In this study, L 9 orthogonal was used to obtain optimum results. It is observed that the Pongamia oil percentage control factor has a significant influence on the weight loss, friction coefficient and wear rate of the pin. The optimum result was A2B3C1 for pin weight loss, friction coefficient and wear rate. The experimental results obtained were in good agreement with the theoretical model. The lubricants were characterized by viscosity using a viscometer. From the experimental results, it is found that wear scar diameter (WSD) is increased with the increase of load for lube oil and reduced by addition of percentage of Pongamia oil. The flash temperature parameter (FTP) also studied in this experiment and results shown that 15% addition of Pongamia oil would result in less possibility of film breakdown. The overall results of this experiment reveal that the addition of 15% Pongamia oil with base lubricant produces better performance and antiwear characteristics. This blend can be used as lubricant oil which is environmentally friendly in nature and would help to reduce petroleum-based lubricants substantially.
