“…More recently, the enhancin gene was introduced into tobacco plant and the transgenic tobacco showed insecticidal activity to Spodoptera exigua, resulting in stunted larval growth, abnormal pupation, and increased larval susceptibility to baculovirus infection (Hashimoto et al, 1994;Hayakawa et al, 2000). These recent studies suggest the feasibility of targeting the PM using a PM specific proteolytic enzyme from a baculovirus.…”

“…Transgenic tobacco plants supplemented with the Plant Biotechnology 23, 55-61 (2006) Expression of an enhancin gene from the Trichoplusia ni granulosis virus confers resistance to lepidopterous insect pests to rice TnGV enhancin gene enhanced infection of the Spodoptera exigua nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeNPV) in the larvae of a lepidopteran insect, S. exigua, and inhibited the growth of T. ni (Hayakawa et al 2000;Cao et al 2002). However, the effect of transgenically expressed enhancin in other plants and to other lepidopteran insects is unknown.…”

“…Disruption of the PM increases viral infection and leads to faster larval mortality (Wang et al 1994). Spodoptera exigua larvae fed on artificial diet containing freezedried leaf powder (1.5% w/w) from transgenic tobacco carrying a Tn-En gene showed a tenfold decrease in LD 50 when infected with Autographa californica nucleopolyhedrovirus occlusion bodies, in comparison with insects fed virus supplemented with leaf powder from nontransformed tobacco (Hayakawa et al 2000). These results suggest that enhancin may have potential as a novel insecticide protein, either alone or in combination with Bt proteins or other insect control measures.…”
