Enhancement of colour quality, growth, and health status of rainbow Kurumoi fish Melanotaenia parva through dietary synthetic carotenoids supplementation

Abstract: Carotenoids were known as pigment sources, the precursor of vitamin A, potential antioxidant and can improve the health status of fish. Furthermore, there are also studies that reveal the role of carotenoids in bone formation and metabolism. This study was conducted to determine the effect of different carotenoids at two different doses in the feed on growth, pigmentation, vitamin A conversion, blood profile, antioxidant activity, and calcium bone of the rainbow fish. Twenty-one aquariums with a volume of 20 L… Show more

“…The color of a fish body is mostly influenced by chromatophores cells that distinct the fish group. Melanophore, xanthophore and erythropore store pigments that absorb light (Meilisza et al, 2018). Increasing in the average color score on the tail of a Swordtail fish is presented in Figure 2.…”

“…On the 40 d the color of tail of the Swordtail fish began to stabilize, there was no increase or decrease. Utilization and bioconversion of carotenoids into main pigments in fish varies, so their effectiveness varies depending on species (Meilisza, et al, 2018).…”

“…Moreover, the effectiveness of carotenoid use is also affected by many factors, and the most important factor is fish species that utilize this substance. In Kurumoi Rainbowfish, astaxanthin is the best pigment for pigmentation, growth, and fish health compared to canthaxanthin and lutein which has been discussed in Meilisza et al (2017) and Meilisza et al (2018;2019).…”

“…Effect of synthetic astaxanthin, chlorella, and spirulina ..... (Nina Meilisza) The addition of synthetic astaxanthin of 2.6 g kg -1 feed was found to be the best dose to enhance color quality, growth, and health status of Kurumoi Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia parva) (Meilisza et al, 2017;2019). However, information regarding the minimum and maximum doses of astaxanthin in the diet of Kurumoi Rainbowfish is not yet available.…”

“…Fish pigmentation depends on the additional feed containing carotenoids. Fish only modify pigments from their dietary sources (Meilisza et al 2019). However, the high cost of synthetic carotenoids limits their use in feed formulations due to increased expenses (Besen et al 2019).…”
