Research on lipid production in microalgae, especially to target biofuels, has been widely published in recent decades. This literature is mostly focused on the optimization of culture conditions, metabolic engineering, biorefinery and downstream processes. At the lab scale, lipid production is very promising concerning biofuels production based on microalgae due to their high lipid content. However, the accumulation of knowledge associated with the development of processes and technologies for the production of biomass and associated lipids has so far not achieved the hoped-for commercial success due to still too expensive operating costs compared to fossil fuels. This review aims to present the influence of various abiotic factors on the accumulation of lipids and lipid profile in microalgae, such as the depletion of the culture medium, temperature and light, but also most innovative like the induction by hormones. Other optimization procedures and the use of wastewater to improve the cost-viability are discussed in perspective.

Enhancement of Astaxanthin and Fatty Acid Production in Haematococcus pluvialis Using Strigolactone

Improving the production rate of high-value nutraceutical compounds, such as astaxanthin and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), is important for the commercialization of Haematococcus pluvialis biorefineries. Here, the effects of a phytohormone, strigolactone analog rac-GR24, on cell growth and astaxanthin and fatty acid biosynthesis in H. pluvialis were investigated. Four concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8 µM) of rac-GR24 were initially added during 30 days of photoautotrophic cultivation. The addition of rac-GR24 improved cell number density and chlorophyll concentration in H. pluvialis cultures compared to the control; the optimal concentration was 8 µM. Despite a slightly reduced astaxanthin content of 30-d-old cyst cells, the astaxanthin production (26.1 ± 1.7 mg/L) improved by 21% compared to the rac-GR24-free control (21.6 ± 1.5 mg/L), owing to improved biomass production. Notably, at the highest dosage of 8 µM rac-GR24, the total fatty acid content of the treated H. pluvialis cells (899.8 pg/cell) was higher than that of the untreated cells (762.5 pg/cell), resulting in a significant increase in the total fatty acid production (361.6 ± 48.0 mg/L; 61% improvement over the control). The ratio of PUFAs, such as linoleic (C18:2) and linolenic (C18:3) acids, among total fatty acids was high (41.5–44.6% w/w) regardless of the rac-GR24 dose.

This study aimed to determine the best fungi to form the algal-bacterial-fungal symbionts and identify the optimal conditions for the synchronous processing of biogas slurry and biogas. Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) and endophytic bacteria (S395-2) isolated from it, and four different fungi (Ganoderma lucidum, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus geesteranus, and Pleurotus corucopiae) were used to form different symbiotic systems. Four different concentrations of GR24 were added to systems to examine the growth characteristics, the content of chlorophyll a (CHL-a), the activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA), the photosynthetic performance, the removal of nutrients, and the biogas purification performance. The results suggested that the growth rate, CA, CHL-a content, and photosynthetic performance of the C. vulgaris-endophytic bacteria-Ganoderma lucidum symbionts were higher than the other three symbiotic systems when 10 À9 M GR24 was added. The highest nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiency 78.36 ± 6.98% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 81.63 ± 7.35% for total nitrogen (TN), 84.05 ± 7.16% for total phosphorus (TP), and 65.18 ± 6.12% for CO 2 was obtained under the above optimal conditions. This approach will provide a theoretical basis for the selection and optimization of the algal-bacterial-fungal symbionts for biogas slurry and biogas purification. Practitioner Points• Algae-bacteria/fungal symbiont presents superior nutrients and CO2 removal capacities.• The maximum CO2 removal efficiency was 65.18 ± 6.12%.• The removal performance was affected by fungi type.
