“…As shown in Figure 3 a,b, bacteria that strongly correlated with NH 4 + -N, TN and HMs occupied an important position in the biological treatment of WWTPs and indirectly reduced the risk of hazards to human health and the environment by reducing the discharge of nitrogen, phosphorus, and HMs. Previous studies found that biochar enhanced the immediate promotion of anaerobic digestion performance, as well as nitrogen and phosphorus removal [ 55 ]. Based on these results, the addition of biochar might also be utilized to treat chemical wastewater, which could facilitate the removal of HMs [ 56 ].…”

“…In addition to acidified bacterial enrichment, the porous characteristics of biochar also facilitate the growth of methanogens such as Methanosaeta , Methanobacterium , Methanosarcina , and Methanolinea (Kumar et al 2021c ; Chen et al 2021a ). Interestingly, an increase in methanogenesis enzymatic activity, such as coenzyme F420, was observed in a biochar-added reactor (Qi et al 2021b ).…”

“…In addition to the adsorption process, biochar can be used to stimulate the microbial niche during anaerobic digestion, hence aiding in the degradation of micro/nano-plastics. Biochar, in particular, can improve direct interspecies electron transfer in anaerobic digestion operations by promoting the growth of Pseudomonas stutzeri and Pseudomonas putida , both of which are known as effective plastic biodegrading bacteria (Qi et al 2021b ).…”

“…Biochars have acquired various surface functional groups after pyrolysis at 500 C. The band at 1400 cm À1 may be caused by OeH in-plane bending and CeH bending, while the band at 3000 cm À1 represents the symmetric CH 3 stretching of the methoxy group, partially caused by OeH stretching [39]. The aromatic CH stretching region (900-700 cm À1 ), the oxygen-containing functional group region (1800-1000 cm À1 ), and the aliphatic CH stretching region between (3000-2700 cm À1 ) are the three main regions influencing anaerobic digestion performance [40]. Our data shows that the vibrations of the biogas residue biochar in these areas are higher than that of corn stover biochar and coconut shell biochar, implying that the corresponding groups are more abundant on the surface of biogas residue biochar.…”
