Enhancement of Sea Wave Potential Energy with Under-Sea Periodic Structures: A Simulation and Laboratory Study

Abstract: This paper is devoted to a theoretical investigation on the wave amplitude enhancement of surface sea water waves with under-sea periodic arrays of cylinders. A two-dimensional shallow water wave equation is derived and solved by using the plane-wave expansion method. The lattice types studied here include triangular, square and hexagonal lattices. These under-sea structures alter the sea bottom topography and induce constructive interference on the surface water waves. Given that the wave potential energy is … Show more

“…Exploration of new renewable energy is a solution that can be done as an alternative to fulfill the needs of electrical energy. Utilization of ocean wave energy (OWC) has the potential to become an alternative energy source that can be used as an energy crisis solution [1][2][3]. In several developed countries located in coastal areas, they have utilized wave energy to the fullest by converting it into electrical energy to meet the needs of the community [4].…”

“…Therefore, for the long term it is necessary to look for alternative energy that is environmentally friendly. Ocean waves are an alternative renewable and environmentally friendly energy source that could be a solution to the energy crisis [1,3]. Based on data on the world's wave energy potential according to the World Energy Council 2016 [4], the Asian and Australasian regions (Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands) receive the highest amount of wave energy, namely 6200 TWh a −1 and 5600 TWh a −1 , followed by South and North America, which also receive a sizeable amount of energy -4600 TWh a −1 and 4000 TWh a −1 respectively.…”
