Enhancement of water barrier properties and tribological performance of hybrid glass fiber/epoxy composites with inclusions of carbon and silica nanoparticles

Abstract: Water barrier properties and tribological performance (hardness and wear behavior) of new hybrid nanocomposites under dry and wet conditions were investigated. The new fabricated hybrid nanocomposite laminates consist of epoxy reinforced with woven and nonwoven tissue glass fibers and two different types of nanoparticles, silica (SiO 2 ) and carbon black nanoparticles (C). These nanoparticles were incorporated into epoxy resin as a single nanoparticle (either SiO 2 or C) or combining SiO 2 and C nanoparticles … Show more

“…To solve the problems of single performance and the application limitations of traditional friction materials, different types of materials have been combined into fabricate composite materials with enhanced performance. For instance, metal‐based friction composites, ceramic‐enhanced friction composites, and fiber‐enhanced friction composites have been developed. Among the fiber composites, carbon fiber friction composites possess the advantages of high dimensional stability, high strength, good wear resistance, high heat resistance, and good thermal conductivity .…”

“…Epoxy resins are considered as one of the most important classes of thermosetting polymers. They are used extensively in protective coatings and structural applications including fiber reinforced composites, electrical laminates, casting, encapsulation, tooling, and adhesives, because of its outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties . There are varying grades of epoxies with varying levels of performance to meet different application needs.…”
