Enhancing diabetic wound healing: advances in electrospun scaffolds from pathogenesis to therapeutic applications

Xuewen Jiang,
Yu-E Zeng,
Chaofei Li
et al.

Abstract: Diabetic wounds are a significant subset of chronic wounds characterized by elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and reactive oxygen species (ROS). They are also associated with impaired angiogenesis, persistent infection, and a high likelihood of hospitalization, leading to a substantial economic burden for patients. In severe cases, amputation or even mortality may occur. Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common complication of diabetes, with up to 25% of diabetic pati… Show more

“…The spinneret is the most important element and is full of innovations because it is the starting point of an EHDA process, a convergent place of all the working fluids and the input of electrical energy (Huang et al, 2024;Li et al, 2022). Typically, electrospinning can be divided into several types according to the structures of the spinneret, such as mono capillary spinneret for a blending electrospinning (Kang et al, 2020;Song, Tang, et al, 2023), a concentric spinneret for a coaxial electrospinning (Jiang et al, 2024;Xing et al, 2018), an eccentric spinneret for a side-by-side electrospinning , and a needleless electrospinning due to a free surface electrospinning without a solid spinneret to guide the working fluids (Ji et al, 2024). However, the most important element that determines the shapes of EHDA products…”

“…The antimicrobial activity of the PS-DMH-Cl membrane were evaluated using Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as model organisms in a standard plate count assay [45,46]. A total of 1 × 1 cm of PS-DMH-Cl membranes were cultured with bacteria suspensions (1 × 10 6 CFU mL -1 ) at 37 • C for a variety of durations.…”
