Enhancing Paper Documents with Direct Access to Multimedia for More Intelligent Support of Reading

Abstract: This paper presents a briefoverview ofrecent technologies that connect multimedia to paper and then identifies features andfunctionalities desirable for the support ofreading. An innovative Cluster Pattern Interface (CL USPIi) is described, along with its potentialfor addressing the specific needs ofreaders ofpaper documents. We argue that by identifying andproperly addressing the specific information needs ofreaders ofpaper documents based on reader requirements found in research literature, advanced levels o… Show more

“…The proposed approach is to use CLUSPI ® enhanced printed materials with direct point and click functionality (Kanev & Kimura, 2006) instead of traditional paper documents. Such printed materials preserve the touch and feel of original educational documents while providing additional affordances, thus enabling students to interact with documents in new non-traditional ways (Kanev & Orr, 2006). One additional benefit of using CLUSPI ® is the possibility for gathering CSCL process related feedback and quality assessment information in a transparent, unobtrusive way.…”

“…Some initial investigations about application of CLUSPI 1 for reading support at university level was already performed (Kanev and Orr, 2006;Turk et al, 2006). We are planning to extend this research to younger audiences by integrating the multilingual multimedia dictionary and conducting experiments at elementary schools in different countries.…”
