Enhancing patient-engaged teamwork in healthcare: an observational case study

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to describe how teamwork that effectively engaged patients and families, manifested itself in an acute rural care setting in order to inform the development of teamwork skills. One hundred and forty participants were included in the study representing providers, patients, family, hospital and clinical support personnel, education specialists and students. Using a modified grounded theory approach, and informed by activity theory, observational field notes and interview transcripts… Show more

“…The transcripts, together with field notes from direct observations, were analyzed in ATLAS.ti 7 qualitative analysis software using an adapted grounded theory sequence in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding (Corbin & Strauss, 2007). Although grounded theory originated in medical sociology, it has been used across social science and health disciplines to analyze qualitative data (Morse, Stern, & Corbin, 2008), including those derived from ethnographic field work, rapid ethnographic assessments, and case studies (Casimiro, Hall, Kuziemsky, O'Connor, & Varpio, 2015; Springgate et al, 2009). Open coding and axial coding began in the field, as the first author cycled between data collection and preliminary analysis, and continued after returning to the United States.…”

“…This may be attributed to the idea that collaboration and support of families are viewed as a nursing responsibility (Malliarou et al 2014 ), or that nurses have a unique and constant relationship with families and patients and are thus best suited for interventions with families (Adams et al 2014 ). However, collaborating with families must be a shared goal of all HCPs (Casimiro et al 2015 ) and to this end, future interventions should strive to include all HCPs in family focused interventions.…”

“…First, it explores common knowledge in work between professionals and clients. The development and application of this concept have focused more on work between professionals or integrated care (see Nuttall, 2013;Stuart, 2014) even when patient engagement is at issue (Casimiro, Hall, Kuziemsky, O'Connor, & Varpio, 2015). Second, it links this concept with aspects of Middleton's (2010) 'D-analysis'an approach that attunes analytically to participants' concerns.…”
