“…Root system development is of particular interest for cypress since field performance has been found to be more strongly correlated with root characteristics (Kostopoulou et al 2010). In addition, short-day treatment seems to enhance root growth of seedlings grown in dry conditions.…”

“…Some nurseries-mainly private ones-keep the containerized seedlings for another year at the nursery area and transplant them at the end of the second vegetative period. Recently, pre-cultivation of cypress seedlings in mini-plugs (plugs with volumes less than 18 cm 3 ) for a period of 5 weeks using a 14-h photoperiod has been found to improve seedling quality; therefore, the incorporation of the mini-plug technique into the species cultivation process shows promise for the future (Kostopoulou et al 2009(Kostopoulou et al , 2010. Consequently, this paper aims at (1) determining whether short-day treatment during seedling pre-cultivation in mini-plugs could further improve seedling characteristics and (2) developing a sound and reliable routine to produce cypress seedlings better adapted to Mediterranean conditions, ensuring in this way higher outplanting success.…”

“…We assumed that a depth of 9.5 cm would not hinder root growth according to data obtained from Kostopoulou et al . (). Pot positions were randomized twice a week.…”

“…This pot size is highly recommended for the first five weeks growth in order to improve survival and outplanting success of C. sempervirens seedlings (Kostopoulou et al . , ). After one month, seedlings were transplanted into larger pots (9 × 9 × 9.5 cm) with the same soil composition.…”
