Enhancing the Accuracy of Hemodynamic Monitoring

Abstract: Assuring that critical care nurses have the skill and knowledge necessary to accurately utilize the many diagnostic monitoring functions available within critical care is essential for optimizing patient outcomes. This performance improvement project focused on the hemodynamic monitoring skills and knowledge level of the critical care nurses in both a cardiovascular and medical/surgical intensive care unit. A four-step progressive intervention strategy was initiated based on our pre-implementation assessment. … Show more

“…Clinical monitoring, starting with simple systemic blood pressure monitoring, varies considerably with hardware support in the development of permanent catheters and ensuring the accuracy of the data during the cardiovascular evaluation process (1,10). The term hemodynamics is defined as the branch of science that deals with blood circulation and the influencing physical factors, and monitoring is a technology that is used frequently in critical care, allowing rapid assessment and intervention, and continuous monitoring of the patient's general condition (11).…”

“…Arterial waveform analysis provides a visual representation of the patient's haemodynamic status. For example, in conditions such as hypovolaemia, the IABP waveform can indicate deficiencies in stroke volume, aortic valve function and left ventricular contractility (Dietz & Smith , Darovic ). Therefore, the ability to assess and interpret the patient's cardiovascular status using this method of blood pressure monitoring enhances the care they receive and aids assessment.…”
