The farmers of Visakhapatnam district were in a great need of best performing and high yielding tomato variety as the existing varieties are less yielders and highly succumb to pests and diseases. An On-Farm Trial (OFT) for three consecutive years (2020-21, 2021-22) was conducted by ICAR- ANGRAU, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kondempudi directly in the farmers’ fields of five selected villages viz. Bangurumeta, Adduru, Thotakurapalem, Pottidorapalem, Jaithavaram and Chedikada in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh to evaluate the performance of two very promising tomato hybrids viz. Arka Abhed and Arka Samrat with regard to yield and economic analysis vis a vis the farmers’ practice variety Laxmi. A total of twenty-five farmers actively participated in the OFT covering an area of 7.5 acres. As regards fruit yield, the tomato hybrid Arka Abhed proved to be the best followed by Arka Samrat and Laxmi hybrid for all the three years of the study with fruit yields of 587.32, 569.13 and 409.14 q/ha, respectively. During the years of the trial, the fruit yields of Arka Abhed and Arka Samrat improved from 27.44 to 30.33% and 24.57 to 28.11%, respectively. Average cost-benefit ratios for three years for Arka Abhed, Arka Samrat and Laxmi hybrid were 1:2.30, 1:2.16 and 1:1.58, respectively. The Extension gap was between 111.18 to 183.86 and 129.08 to 202.83 q/ha for Arka Samrat and Arka Abhed, respectively. Results on Technology Index viz. 15.25, 19.47 and 28.83% for Laxmi (farmers’ practice), Arka Abhed and Arka Samrat, respectively, revealed that for both the tomato hybrids, there is viability of the demonstrated technology in the area of the OFT viz. Visakhapatnam district and the surrounding areas of north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

SUMMARY :The KVKs play an important role in transferring new agricultural technologies and enhancing the productivity of crops through trainings and FLDs. Keeping in view all beneficiaries of moong bean demonstrations (96) from 18 adopted villages of KVK were selected purposively. To compare the production and profitability, the yield data of FLDs and control plots were collected from each farmers and averaged out in each year at all locations during study [2010][2011][2012][2013]. Maximum average demonstration yield 11.83 q ha -1 was recorded in Kharif 2011 while minimum yield 6.02 q ha -1 was recorded in Kharif 2013. It clearly shows that maximum 39.69 per cent yield increased over control plot during the Kharif season 2010, it was followed by 24.26, 19.36 and 21.86 per cent in each study year. Similarly, after conducting the FLDs and trainings by KVK in adopted villages the change in extent of adoption of new technological interventions were increased upto 29.16 per cent in case of HYVs, 29.13 per cent balance dose of NPK, 21.87 per cent in seed treatment, 20.83 per cent use zinc sulphate, and 18.75 per cent increases were in proper seed rate and use of insecticides. During studies years the net profit from demonstrations were found higher than control plot, it was maximum i.e., Rs. 35350/-in which Rs. 6400/-per hectare was more as compared to control plot i.e., Rs. 28950/-in year 2012. Maximum extention gap (2.58) recorded in Kharif 2010 which was later on decreased upto 2.31, 1.52 and 1.08 in all, respectively years. It shows positive role of KVK in performance of FLDs moongbean with improvement in socio-economic status of the farmers.

Increasing productivity of crops ensure the food and nutritional security of the farmers which depends upon the soil fertility and productivity. Pulses can play a vital role in nutritional requirement and also increases the fertility status of the soil. In Tripura state, pulses are grown in very small area using mostly local varieties. Area under different pulses crop in Tripura is 5361 ha (2008-09) and production is 3496 MT. In general, farmers do not follow scientific package of practices due to which the productivity of pulses is only 600 kg/ha. With a view to increase the productivity level of pulses and nutritional security of the farmers family of South Tripura, 60 front line demonstration (FLD) on three pulse crops like lentil, Moong and Arhar was undertaken during Kharif and Rabi season of 2008-10 by Krishi Vigyan Kendra of South Tripura. The objective of the FLD on pulses was to demonstrate the potential of improved varieties and technologies to the farmers. Five villages were identified through PRA method. Awareness programme and training on scientific cultivation practices of lentil, Moong and Arhar were conducted before starting the FLD. Besides imparting training, printed leaflets on pulses were distributed among the farmers for their ready reference. Field day programme was also conducted in the farmer's field in standing crop. Altogether 12 ha area of pulses was covered under this programme. Improved variety of lentil (WBL-58), Moong (HUM-16) and Arhar (Narendra-1) were demonstrated for obtaining higher yield as compared to local varieties and traditional method of cultivation. Yield percentage increased from 21.43 to 40 per cent. Farmers earned upto Rs. 43,000/-by selling pulses crops in the local market. The enhanced production through the demonstration of improved technologies with improved varieties in pulses helping farmers for its adoption for achieving the nutritional security (protein) of their family.How to cite this article : Chakraborti, Mandira (2015).
