Enrichment of MTHFR 677 T in a Chinese long-lived cohort and its association with lipid modulation

Abstract: BackgroundVariants in the Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene may result in a lowered catalytic activity and associate with subsequent elevated serum homocysteine (Hcy) concentration, abnormal DNA synthesis and methylation, cardiovascular risk, and unhealthy aging. Several investigations on the relationship of MTHFR C677T polymorphism with serum lipid profile and longevity have been conducted in some populations, but the findings remain mixed. Herein, we sought to look at the association between M… Show more

“…For instance, Chen et al initially failed to find significant difference in the four lipid measures (TG, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C) among the MTHFR C677T genotypes in longevous individuals [37]. However, when gender was taken into consideration, the MTHFR 677 T allele carriers of females but not males were found to have significantly higher levels of TC and LDL-C than CC genotype.…”

“…In northern Chinese subjects with hyperlipidemia, individual carried MTHFR 677CT + TT genotypes showed higher triacylglycerols and total homocysteine compared with wild-type [ 22 ]. However, Chen et al found no significant association between MTHFR C677T and lipid profiles (TC, TAG, HDL-C and LDL-C) in total population, but in subgroup analysis, the mutant T allele carriers have higher total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol than 677CC group in women [ 30 ]. In another Chinese clinical research, both plasma Hcy level and MTHFR C677T mutant have no association with hyperlipidemia or serum lipid levels [ 31 ].…”
