Abstract. A number of reviews and meta-analyses have consistently documented the positive effect of individual psychological intervention with clinical older adults suffering from late-life depression, anxiety disorders, or other mental illnesses. However, many older adults without clinical disorders might seek and benefit from individual psychological interventions too. Given the aging populations across the globe, knowing the potential efficacy of individual psychological interventions with non-clinical older adults therefore is important. However, the research on this topic has not been reviewed systematically. This was the primary aim of the present review. Secondarily, we wanted to find out how many of these studies were conducted in a European context. A systematic literature search identified nine eligible studies yielding an aggregated sample size of 983. Two of these were European. Eight of the nine studies (including one European) reported significant positive effects of individual psychological interventions, that is, increases in psychological well-being and decreases in depression symptoms and distress. Effect sizes were extracted or calculated when possible to estimate the magnitude of the intervention effects. These effect sizes varied across studies and ranged from trivial in size to large and even very large, the median being a medium effect size. The results from the present review suggest that non-clinical older adults benefit from individual psychological interventions. However, the limited number of studies available for review precludes conclusions regarding the comparative efficacy of different types of psychological interventions in this population. Directions for future research are discussed.

“…Working from 205 videotaped segments from 33 couples therapies, and using hierarchical regression models, Woldarsky meneses and Greenberg (2014) examined the impact of three core components on outcome: the "offender's expression of shame," the injured partner's "accepting response to the shame," followed by an "in-session expression of forgiveness." they found that the offending partner's "expression of shame" was the strongest predictor of forgiveness posttherapy (accounting for 33% of the variance on the Enright forgiveness Inventory; Enright, rique, & coyle, 2000). this is an important finding suggesting that shame has an adaptive function in the reparation process for couples as it facilitates forgiveness.…”

I n his novel The Schopenhauer Cure, Yalom (2005) illustrated group psychotherapy with a fictional account that embodies much of his clinical experience. At one point in the life of the group, the fictional group therapist, Julius, sees a moment for "forgiveness" in his group. He then takes a momentary mental detour:Julius almost flinched when the buzzword forgiveness passed through his mind. Of all the recent movements swirling around the field of therapy, the hullabaloo around "forgiveness" annoyed him the most. He, like every experienced therapist, . . . had always used a wide variety of methods to help his patients "forgive"-that is, detach from their anger and resentment. (Yalom, 2005, p.179) This likely represents the thoughts of many therapists, group or otherwise, who have also worked with scores of clients and patients struggling to let go of past hurts. So, then, is forgiveness nothing more than helping clients to "detach from their anger and resentment?" Is the "hullabaloo" around psychotherapeutic attempts to promote forgiveness unwarranted? The considerable research that has been done on forgiveness would suggest otherwise.Although group therapists have addressed the negative experiences and pain of their group members for as long as group therapy has been conducted, explicitly helping clients to forgive their offenders has only more recently been a focus of treatment.
