Enrofloxacin degradation in broiler chicken manure under various laboratory conditions

Abstract: The rate of degradation of enrofloxacin in broiler chicken manure has been characterized in the laboratory according to the CVMP guideline on determining the fate of veterinary medicinal products in manure. Degradation was followed in a flow-through system under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, in the dark and in the presence of light. The rate of degradation of enrofloxacin and the formation of its degradation products are dependent on laboratory conditions. A rapid degradation of enrofloxacin in the dark wa… Show more

“…The abuse of antibiotics in poultry and the residues of antibiotics in animals and the environment play a considerable role in the development of resistance among zoonotic food-borne microorganisms ( Racewicz et al, 2020 ). The half-life of ENR is 59.1 days/115.0 days, 88.9 days, and 190.8 days in the dark/light, aerobic, and anaerobic conditions, respectively ( Slana and Sollner-Dolenc, 2016 ). Thus, ENR can exist in chicken feces for a long time.…”

“…The parameters were calculated using computer program R (version 3.0.3) with active kin fit software. A degradation DT 50 (Half-Life) was calculated by Equation 3 used in line with FOCUS guidelines for each set of laboratory conditions to which samples were exposed [24]. The following linear equation was used [25]: (2) …where Ln(C) is natural logarithm of concentration, t is time given to the compound for degradation, K 1 is the first-order rate constant (slop) and a is the empirical constant equal to intercept.…”

“…According to European Medicines Agency (EMA) reports on sales of veterinary antimicrobial agents, a total of 146.4 tonnes of fluoroquinolones (FQs) were sold in 2021 in 31 EU/EEA countries (stagnation of consumption since 2017). Approximately 60–87% of ENR is excreted non-metabolized and the rest is excreted mainly as ciprofloxacin (CIP) (Slana and Sollner-Dolenc 2015 ).…”
