“…This low figure is remarkably different from the results reported in studies from Bangladesh (Black et al 1982a, b) and Brazil (Guerrant et al 1983) and other countries (Rowland, 1983;Mata, 1978), where ETEC seem to represent the most frequent bacterial agent associated with acute diarrhoea. The high incidence of EPEC detected in this study resembles other local results obtained in hospitalized children in Santiago (Prado et al 1984). “…No entanto, acreditamos que ocorrência deste parasito seja realmente pequena, já que os resultados encontrados no grupo-controle foram próximos e, que este parasito apresentou, também, freqüências similares (3,4%) em pacientes não diarréicos em estudo anterior (Patrício et al, 2002). “…29 Llama la atencion que la frecuencia de E. coli enterotoxigenico fue igual en ninos con diarrea y en controles en el verano 83 y diferente en el pen'odo 86. En un estudio en que se caracterizaron las cepas toxigenicas, observamos que existe un amplio predominio de cepas que pro- ducen enterotoxina termoestable (ST) exclusivamentc, expresan Factor de Colonizacion I (CFAI) y pertenecen al serotipo 0153: H6 30 ; esto estarfa indicando que babn'a una cepa endemica predominante en nuestro ambiente, la cual a travcs de infecciones repctidas podn'a inducir una inmunidad parcial. Se requieren otras invcstigaciones para podcr cntender mejor la epidcmiologia de las infecciones por E. coli enterotoxigenico en nuestros lactantes.…”
