Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli O153?H45 from an outbreak of diarrhoea in Spain

Abstract: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains belonging to a characteristic serobiotype, O153:H45 ST+, were isolated from an outbreak of neonatal diarrhoea in Valencia, Spain. The restriction of the geographical location of this clone to South America and Spain is discussed.

“…A n ETEC strain of serotype 0153: K-: H45 was also isolated in another outbreak localized in Madrid, but in another hospital, in 1984. In previous studies, enterotoxigenic strains of serotype 0153:H45 have also been found to be the most common ETEC strains occurring in sporadic cases of infant diarrhoea in Chile (1) and in Spain (9), but they have only been isolated occasionally in other countries (12,16,20,21,22). Escribano et aL (21) reported that an STaproducing strain of serotype 0153: H45 was responsible for an outbreak of neonatal diarrhoea in 1984 in a Spanish hospital in the city of Valencia.…”

The two enterotoxigenic strains 0153: K-: H45 detected in this study showed an identical antibiotic resistance pattern to the ETEC strain causing the diarrhoeal outbreak in Valencia (21) and to the majority of ETEC strains 0153:H45 isolated in Chile (1) from sporadic cases of infant diarrhoea.…”
