Entheogens and psychedelics in Canada: Proposal for a new paradigm.

Abstract: After decades of prohibition, scientific and academic inquiry into the psychedelic sciences has been reignited in the West. Alongside research, clinicians are being permitted to study the effects of psychedelic substances in humans, and the door has been opened to deliver psychedelic-assisted therapies for mental health needs. However, despite excitement for the professional use of psychedelics, there are few, if any, overarching principles regulating such studies and treatment approaches in Canada. To this en… Show more

“…We see very similar issues and challenges facing the Australian clinical community to those identified in Canada by Rochester and colleagues (37). Based on these similarities, we see merit in recommending an Advisory Committee that draws upon the expertise of the medical colleges and professional associations, alongside academic institutions, cultural groups, regulators, and the broader community.…”

In the Canadian model, those councils would advise on, inter alia, ethical codes of conduct, education and training, core clinical competencies, and accreditation of clinicians and practitioners to provide psychedelic-assisted therapies to clients.…”

“…Formal guidelines, curricula and training-devised in conjunction with regulators and organisations that educate and support psychiatrists-will be needed before psychiatrists will feel ready to participate in the delivery of this promising new treatment paradigm. For example, a multi-disciplinary group from Canada recently recommended that a National Advisory Council be created to make recommendations and around training and accreditation for clinicians involved in the provision of PAP there (19). In summary, however strong the research evidence for the efficacy of PAP in psychiatric disorders, our findings suggest this will be insufficient for PAP to be implemented within NHS mental health services without considerable attention on the workforce needed to deliver it.…”

“…Psychedelic research necessarily brings with it political entanglements. In Canada, a team of six appointed experts, including Religious Studies scholar Anne Vallely, recently submitted a report to the government detailing recommendations for the safe implementation of psychedelic use (Rochester et al 2021). In the United States, political prospects for psychedelic drugs seem more doubtful, at least in the short term.…”
