Entrepreneurial intentions: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this research is to identify the main authors, the main influential universities doing research on entrepreneurial intentions (EIs), the main subject areas and the main productive academic journals on this topic. This paper also aims to shed light on the current knowledge and contributions to the field, in particular co-authorships, co-words, research topics and cluster of themes.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology is based on bibliometric techniques using mapping and clustering. “…Recommendations and new lines of research, linking antecedents and topics, are the final contribution of this paper. T Variables Entrepreneurial intentions: a bibliometric analysis (Ruiz-Alba, Guzmán-Parra, Vila Oblitas and Morales Mediano 2021) [ 38 ] 1993–2016 (23 years) Scopus DC Document 377 VOSviewer Bibliometric techniques (co-authorships, co-word analysis, research topics, and cluster of themes) are applied to highlight: the most influential authors (Liñán, Fayolle, Urbano, Guerrero, Santos and Nabi), and the most productive ones (Liñán −12; Kautonen −8; and Fayolle −7). The most productive journals in terms of the number of publications (IJESB -34, IEMJ -20, E&T −19, MJSS -12) and terms of the number of citations (JBV).…”

“…In contrast to what happens at the institutional level, studies conducted by researchers on entrepreneurial behaviour at the regional level have aimed at designing causal predictive models, with descriptive studies being far less numerous [20][21][22][23]. Causal models are dominated by those aimed at predicting entrepreneurial intention, generally comprised of personal, non-contextual variables [21,24]. Researchers are interested in entrepreneurial intention because intention is the variable that best predicts the behaviour of creating a new company, which is considered a fundamental variable that is difficult to measure [24].…”

Researchers are interested in entrepreneurial intention because intention is the variable that best predicts the behaviour of creating a new company, which is considered a fundamental variable that is difficult to measure [24]. The causal models developed by authors to predict intention have received some criticism for not reflecting the complex nature of entrepreneurial behaviour and for their reduced predictive potential.…”

“…Such organizational behaviors require opportunities. After all, the behaviors stem from decisions about resources that are not widely known, in the name of self-serving purposes, which are potentially disruptive or threatening to other firms or individuals (Ruiz-Alba et al ., 2021). However, for the firm undertaking the opportunistic behaviors, the evaluation of these behaviors is regarded widely as positive.…”
