Entrepreneurial University Archetypes

Abstract: Most research on the entrepreneurial university is case-study based. While this helps us to understand specific characteristics of particular cases, integrative studies that build on cumulated knowledge have yet to be conducted. This study aims to synthesize existing research and to generate archetypes of the entrepreneurial university by conducting a qualitative meta-synthesis of the empirical literature. The underlying assumption of this research is that there is no single model or best type of the … Show more

“…In fact, there is high heterogeneity from one case to another. This is because variables such as university's history, tradition, resources and organizational structure, beside the characteristics of the socioeconomic system, have a high impact on its attitudes towards relationships with external partners and on its ability to play a key role in stimulating local development (Etzkowitz, 2004;Powers and Mcdougall, 2005;Bercovitz and Feldman, 2006;Wright et al, 2007;Martinelli, Meyer and von Tunzelmann, 2008;Hussler, Picard and Tang, 2010;Guerrero et al, 2014;Bronstein and Reihlen, 2014;Guerrero, Cunningham and Urbano, 2015). Accordingly, "there is no typical way to be or become an entrepreneurial university" (Martinelli, Meyer and von Tunzelmann, 2008;p.…”

“…Consequently, entrepreneurship and EM educators must be encouraged to grow an entrepreneurial mind-set themselves, developing skills that were not traditionally demanded of teachers previously (e.g., risk taking) (Hannon, 2018). Some academics addressed this problem through the construction of educators’ profiles or archetypes (Bronstein & Reihlen, 2014), finding unexpected complexities and diversity along the way. From a different viewpoint, Blenker et al (2012) focused on understanding the role that cultural diversity, including gender, regional, and other characteristics, played in the construction of an educator’s style and contents curation, implying that teaching in EM is “always going to be a subjective interpretation” (Henry, 2020, p. 670).…”

“…Collaboration between universities and industries and the maintenance of these strategic partnerships have long faced significant challenges. An example of these challenges is universities’ restructuring due to constant budget cuts, impelling these institutions to become increasingly entrepreneurial (Bronstein and Reihlen 2014; Dalmarco, Hulsink, and Blois 2018; Pugh 2017). Another example is researchers’ entrepreneurial capacity (D’Este and Patel 2007).…”
