“…Our findings are in line with studies that have argued for the importance of the heterogenicity of a family firm (Stanley et al, 2017;Yang et al, 2018). Family heterogenicity in the pursuit of SEW and its multiple dimensions have been ignored in the literature to date (Debicki et al, 2016;Hauck et al, 2016;Yang et al, 2018), and the concept of SEW has been indiscriminately treated and measured by proxies such as family ownership and family control (Gómez-Mejía et al, 2007;Berrone et al, 2012;Sciascia et al, 2014;Cardella et al, 2020). Our study finds heterogenic effects of external and internal SEW on the international expansion of family businesses, thus supporting the idea of heterogenicity in a family business's pursuit of SEW (Gómez-Mejía et al, 2007;Gomez-Mejia et al, 2011;Chirico and Nordqvist, 2010;.…”

“…Along these factors, the literature analysis has also allowed us to identify the role of the surrounding environment, focusing mainly on the family (Cluster 4, in yellow). Our analysis showed the crucial and positive role of family members, especially when external support systems are limited (Chang et al, 2009(Chang et al, , 2012, both as a source of economic support, especially at the start of a business (Shen et al, 2017;Cardella et al, 2020), and on the motherhood issue (Jennings and McDougald, 2007), providing moral and psychological support to women who have to reconcile family responsibilities with the desire for professional development.…”

“…Entrepreneurial competencies (e.g., identifying opportunities) are defined as a multidimensional clusters made up of values, knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to successfully create a company [82][83][84]. Finally, the literature highlights the process of entrepreneurial role adoption by the subject that she or he observes in a family member, which largely explains the succession process [85][86][87].…”
