Entry-level engineering professionals and Product Lifecycle Management: a competency model

Abstract: Today's global job market requires a worker-oriented focus that emphasises individuals' competencies and is steadily phasing out the task-oriented model that once dominated most work environments. Also impacting the world of work is the pressure to eliminate all forms of waste in manufacturing as companies strive to compete on a global scale. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), considered to be the next generation of lean thinking, shows great promise as a means of managing and tracking products through their … Show more

“…The Society of Manufacturing Engineers has been researching "competency gaps" (specific capabilities that companies insist are lacking) and developing a 'Manufacturing Education Plan' [12]. Academia have also responded to the needs of the changing workforce from one that is task oriented to one of that is competency based through the development of innovative curricula, such as Purdue University's initiative to develop a PLM-literate workforce [12].…”

“…The use of textbooks, both students and teachers, must really be considered. The reason is, the curriculum that is now being applied emphasizes more on character values, and morals, not least in the subject of Islamic Religious Education and Character Education (Frillman et al, 2007). So, you can imagine if the book that is used as a guide contains material that leads to the values of violence, intolerance, and other negative things, of course students can be affected and make the information in the book as a truth.…”

“…In order to deal with the collaboration between task decomposition and task scheduling, Liu et al [12] put forward a new method for task granularity quantitative analysis, which is used to guide the coarse-grained task decomposition and recombine the subtasks with low cohesion coefficient. Currently, in the study of capacity and matching degree for CPD, Frillman et al [13] proposed a competency model for engineers functioning in a PLM environment that emphasized individuals' competencies. Wu et al [14] proposed a resource capability measuring method and resource capability deployment mechanism by mapping resource task capability item (RTCI) to resource physical capability item (RPCI).…”
