Environmental and Pro-Social Norms: Evidence on Littering

Abstract: The paper investigates the relationship between pro-social norms and its implications for improved environmental outcomes. This is an area, which has been neglected in the environmental economics literature. We provide empirical evidence to demonstrate a small but significant positive impact between perceived environmental cooperation (reduced public littering) and increased voluntary environmental morale. For this purpose we use European Values Survey (EVS) data for 30 European countries. We also demonstrate … Show more

“…Therefore, measures affecting both social and individual norms are proposed (García-Valiñ as et al, 2012). In this regard, authors in other geographical contexts have already pointed out the relevance of both interpersonal trust and institutional trust in environmental behaviour (Jorgensen et al, 2009) and of volunteer-based environmental actions (Torgler et al, 2009). Action should also be taken to improve situations in which pro-environmental behaviour is conditioned by certain attitudinal barriers (mainly related to mobility, transport and public goods).…”

“…Although today theoretical approaches which include aspects such as pro-social norms, altruism and other values affecting pro-environmental behaviour are gaining in importance (García-Valiñ as, Macintyre, & Torgler, 2012;Torgler, Frey, & Wilson, 2009), the TPB, which is the theoretical basis of this study, mainly reflects the attitudes and perceived possibilities necessary to carry out a specific behaviour. The Value-Belief-Norm theory, for its part, focuses on the values, beliefs and moral norms which determine specific pro-environmental behaviours (Kaiser, Hü bner, & Bogner, 2005).…”

“…Such perceptions influence whether people will find it fair or unfair to contribute to the common good 'unilaterally' (cf. Frey and Torgler, 2007;Torgler and Schneider, 2005;Torgler et al, 2009;Hammar et al, 2009). It is in other words crucial that authorities can launch appropriate institutional arrangements and policy measures.…”
