Environmental Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste by Two-Stage Plasma Gasification

Abstract: Plasma gasification is a thermal treatment successfully applied to waste streams, especially for solid residues. It sets an upgrade to more common waste-to-energy (WtE) techniques as incineration or gasification, granting lower levels of pollutant emissions, less landfilled materials and higher conversion efficiencies and producer gas quality. A life cycle assessment (LCA) of plasma gasification for one ton of a defined stream of solid waste is presented and compared to the hypothetical outcomes of incineratio… Show more

“…Slightly improved results for this technique have been published ( Evangelisti et al, 2015a ; Evangelisti et al, 2015b ), given the inclusion of a by-product within the boundaries, constituting an extra avoided burden. Further discussion about the environmental results, a thorough analysis of the impact categories as well as sensitivity analysis for each may be found in ( Ramos et al, 2018b ; Ramos et al, 2018c ; Ramos et al, 2019b ).…”

“…The functional unit (fu) was defined as the thermal treatment of 1 t of MSW, its characterization being shown in Table 2 . Further information on the experimental conditions is described in ( Ramos et al, 2018b ; Ramos et al, 2018c ; Ramos et al, 2019b ).…”

“…Many studies summarise new information for the treatment processes of polypropylene waste with a comparison between the different technologies [ 46 , 47 , 48 ]. The thermic treatment process (pyrolysis, incineration, gasification, and plasma-based technology) can be considered on the basis of the environmental burden and energy efficiency [ 49 , 50 , 51 ]. The new technologies enable greater market penetration, since these secondary energy sources are compatible with gas turbines and gas motors [ 52 , 53 ].…”

“…There are many factors that affect the slag viscosity at different temperatures, and the governing factor is the chemical composition of ash. The compositions of hazardous wastes vary in a wide range [10][11][12][13][14]. For the raw materials with high SiO 2 content, the polymeric network structure composed of long silicate chains formed during the ash transformation process is dominant so that the flow resistance of the slag should increase at high temperature [15,16].…”
